In honor of the season 5 release of Voltron: The Legendary Defender on Netflix this Friday, I’ve compiled a list of my 5 favorite giant robots. That’s it. Nothing fancy. Just giant, fighting death machines. SO ON WITH THE LIST!!
Gurren Lagann – Gurren Lagann
As the big mechanical muscle of team Dai-Gurren, this machine is piloted by the awe-inspiring Kamina and meek but determined Simon. Each and every day, they find a new ability too drive off the beastmen and protect humanity. While this suit may not have fany ridiculous features, it doesn’t need on any. Thanks to master pilots Kamina and Simon, they make due with a simple but powerful, continuously upgrading drill.
Chamber – Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
There’s only one thing better than piloting a giant mecha, and that’s not piloting a giant mecha because it’s fully automated so you can just kick your feet up and enjoy the ride. Chamber is an an artificial intelligence-automated, humanoid-shaped battle suit that frequently gets its pilot out of some sticky situations. Not to say that its pilot, Ledo, isn’t a competent pilot. In fact he’s a fantastic pilot that frequently has to convince Chamber not to kill all organic life it comes into contact with. Ledo just often finds himself in tough situations that are made dramatically easier by having a smart, giant robot. Plus, Chamber’s energy halos are super cute in a kind of angel-of-death way.
Midori (formerly known as Vox Aura) – Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-ne
Magical girl mecha?? Uh yes please! Besides the beautiful green/aquamarine color that this mech sports, it packs a serious punch. Like, planet busting powers. But no worries! Midori’s pilot Madoka keeps everything under control. I don’t know how she does it with her busy schedule. With 2 different operating modes, she can either stab you through the chest with the nose of Midori while in aircraft mode or just straight throw hands in its upright position. A super advanced piece of alien tech being piloted by a high school Kendo champion only results in good things.
KG-6 Sleipnir – Aldnoah.Zero
Making quick work of enemies that have advanced Martian technology, Inaho and his Kataphrakt are nothing to take for granted. Even though he pilots a simple training Kataphrakt with little armor and weapons, Inaho’s ingenuity, heightened by a new, advanced mechanical eye, makes use of its outstanding mobility. No fancy bells or whistles or laser swords. Just good ol’ heavy artillery and smarts and an orange color that will forever be ingrained in the minds of his enemies.
Shinkiro – Code Geass
Super over powered and built with an almost impenetrable defense, this mech is also piloted by a guy that can control people just by looking at them with his fancy eye and speaking commands. Completely unfair advantage as far as combat is concerned. Armed with a chest cannon that can obliterate almost anything on site, Shinkiro is mostly used by Lelouch/Zero for transportation probably because it has 2 massive combat flaws. It can’t keep its Absolute Defense System up while simultaneously shooting its chest cannon so it leaves a giant gap for enemies. Flaws aside, the armor is pretty snazzy looking with a set of gold fingers and toes.
