My Favorite Anime Series of 2017

Oh 2017, you were such a great year for anime, both new and old. I will TRY to keep this list short but I will make no promises so you’ll just have to sit through this whole post because I know you value my opinion just like you did with the first anime post I made here.

Made in Abyss Season 1
(Available on Anime Strike/Amazon Prime)

I already made a long post about this show previously on the blog so you can go check that one out here if you’d like a more thorough look into the show. This show for me flew completely under the radar. I didn’t know it had existed until I saw a post in a nerd group on Facebook about how traumatizing it was. So of course I subjected myself to the trauma because why not? And I was not disappointed. Between the art style and the story, I can’t say which I enjoyed the most about the show. 10’s all around. Definitely a must watch.

My Hero Academia Season 2
(Available on Hulu/Crunchyroll/Funimation)

Just as great as the first season. Even though this season isn’t filled to the brink with huge events, the character and plot development never feels tedious or out of place. The animation is still incredible.

The Ancient Magus Bride Season 1
(Available on Crunchyroll)

Vibrant colors, remarkable animation and a compelling story shape this into one of my favorite anime of the year. The universe of this particular show is so interesting that I want to know more about it and not just the main story.

Inuyashiki Season 1
(Available on Anime Strike/Amazon Prime/Funimation)

This was a really uh interesting ride. I’m personally not fond of blending CGI with traditional animation but it isn’t overpowering in this series. Even though this show gets a little deep, the characters are very cut and dry, They’re either good or evil and I liked it like that.

Fate/Apocrypha Season 1
(Available on Netflix/Funimation)

Another installment of the Fate Series and another satisfied viewer. The story takes the rules of the previous Holy Grail Wars and completely takes a huge dump on them. Sh*t hits the fan immediately and we are once again thrust into the chaotic war between factions and rooting for our favorite heroes. 2017 was full of beautifully animated shows and this was one of them.

King’s Game The Animation Season 1
(Available on Cruncyroll/Hulu/Funimation)

Full of suspense and dread, King’s Game quickly became my guilty pleasure. It doesn’t make sense and it will make even less sense if you don’t have any prior knowledge of the games and novel the anime is based on, but for some odd reason I still enjoyed it.

Neo Yokio Season 1
(Available on Netflix)

I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW. Everyone hates this show but me and IDGAF. I thought this show was hilarious and a fantastic parody of the lives of socialites and of the anime genre. Yes the voice acting is atrocious and yes the animation is sub-par but I found myself enjoying every little bit of this show.

Honorable Mentions: Here are shows that I watched in 2017 that I also enjoyed. Some shows on this list didn’t air in 2017 but I just happened to watch or re-watch them this past year.

Food Wars Season 3

Railgun Season 2

No Game No Life season 1

Black Clover Season 1

Blood Blockade Battlefront Season 2

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress Season 1

Overlord Season 1

Rage of Bahamut Season 1

Juuni Taisen: Zodiac War Season 1

What great anime have you watched in 2017? What are you looking forward to in 2018? Let us know down in the comment section!

I also kind of liked King’s Game for reasons that are unlikely to become clear anytime soon other than I happen to like bad horror.
Other shows I liked (other than the obvious big titles) included Princess Principal and Girls’ Last Tour.

King’s Game is sort of like a trainwreck that i cannot stop watching. I haven’t finished Girls’ Last Tour yet but what I’ve seen so far I reeeeally like. And I’ll be sure to check out Princess Principal. I haven’t heard of that one before. What platform can it be viewed on?

I had it on AnimeLab but that’s only Australia/New Zealand. Not sure where else it was streaming.
