Old-school gamers will remember the classic NES game Castlevania and its intense difficulty as a platformer. The game boasted nightmarish imagery and the neverending quest to vanquish Dracula.
After 42? games officially released in the series, we are now (finally) getting an animated adaptation. The series will be a Netflix original and animated by Frederator Studios (Adventure Time) and written by legendary comic book author Warren Ellis (Red, Astonishing X-Men, Gun Machine). And, according to Ellis himself, he has been working for more than a decade to give this game a film adaptation. Executive producer Adi Shankar promises that this show will be “super violent” and “set the bar” for video game adaptations.
Paying homage to the original game, the trailer opens with a dope throwback shot of a classic NES system, a Castlevania cartridge, and a static-filled TV that begins to register the picture. The artwork for this animation looks superb. I’m getting a Claymore/Avatar: The Last Airbender vibe from the visuals. This gore-fest looks like it will be a fun ride that I personally cannot wait for. Netflix releases Castlevania on July 7th. Let us know if you’re gonna check it out!
Official Netflix synopsis: Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar.
